Mountmellick - Di Ford Mystery

I started working on the Di Ford mystery quilt back in September of 2014 along with hundreds of other women.

The almost final border was made of all  these paper pieced stars.  I am not really a big fan of english paper piecing but they had to be made so I decided to order the papers and a template from Paperpieces.com

The papers were great but I was not too happy with the plastic template.  It had too much writing on it making it very difficult to see what you wanted to fussy cut for the center.

The seam allowance was so large it lapped over itself and had to be trimmed wasting fabric and time. I did push on and managed to make all 36 stars.

Now all that's  left is the last little fabric border.  I really love this quilt and am so glad I made it.
It contained two first for me broderie perse  and english paper piecing

Until next time happy stitching.
Nancy

  5. 3 cheers!!! It looks fabulous - seems like the stars took forever when I was making them. Even doing simple machine quilting around each one is time consuming. But like you there were firsts for me too and now we all share a special connection with everyone who made theirs. Will you hand or machine quilt? (Feeling guilty here about machine work but it had to be).

  6. Your Montmellick looks beautiful! I just read about all your finishes as I slowly plod along to make my tops!! I think you can get the plastic templates with a smaller seam allowance so it does not overlap so much with the small pieces.

  7. Good for you being so close to the end! Your quilts is beautiful! I agree on the plastic templates-- I'm not sure why they have 3/8" seam allowance--way too much!

  10. How curious that I am almost as far as you are with this quilt, as I am putting on the last of the 4 "almost-last borders" right now. And just like you, the EPP (which I do not like) and the broderie perse (which I do like!) were first-timers for me as well. It was quite a job, but turned out to be a stunning quilt. Yours has become gorgeous!!! Now I have to take a deep sigh and start on the last border, but I am a bit scary that the fabric I got in the package will not be enough to obtain the right balance in the borders... In a week or so I will know.

  11. I sure hope you are happy with it because it is specatcular! Good for you for finishing!!!
One might guess that the completion rate is significantly smaller than the starting rate.
    Just guessing. :)

  13. Fantastic job. That last pieced border did take forever, but now it's done and looks terrific. I also agree about the plastic template. I didn't know the reason why the .sa is so much wider than normal. You persevered.

  15. I am glad you pushed on......and now have a heirloom quilt!!! I love EPP and the papers and acrylic from Paper Pieces. The wide seam allowance is great when working on a large quilt and the papers start falling out and you know that the seam is not going to pull out before you get the quilt quilted!!!!
